My CrossFit Beginnings
• Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you became interested in CrossFit?
It all started when I became an Exercise Physiologist student and began working as a receptionist at Coogee Beach Fitness Club (which Jason co-owned at the time). The opening of Mvmt Hub soon came around and I was exposed to the world of CrossFit and thought this is cool and addictive. Needless to say, my love for it continued on from then!
• What inspired you to become a coach at MVMT Hub?
I was driven to be a coach at Hub from its surrounding ethos that Jason created. Ensuring an inclusive, accommodating environment whether you are a newbie, or already a well-versed athlete in the world of CrossFit training. I love the methods behind being able to adapt the workout of the day, to the person in front of us, it really hones in on that person-centred approach.
Coaching Style, Highlights and Staying ahead of the Game
• How would you describe your coaching style?
My coaching style would be “inclusive”. I like to focus on the person that is in front of me, whatever phase of life that they are in, what their goals are, how the workouts or movements may be modified to them. I believe in ensuring everyone is involved in the session no matter what variations are required. Working out is better as a group!
• Can you share a memorable moment or achievement in your coaching career?
Probably seeing the ‘light bulb’ moment for a lot of people with complex movements. It makes me feel great knowing I have relayed enough examples, variations of explanation and coaching cues to get them to that understanding.
• What do you find most rewarding about coaching?
It’s seeing the progress people make from the hard work they put in, and the time they have allocated to invest in their health.
• How do you approach nutrition and wellness in your own life?
This is super important for me. As a person that struggled with food growing up, it is now a fuel source for me to achieve my goals of getting stronger.
Stress management is a big one for me, I find coming to the gym really helps me achieve this so I prioritise sessions for myself throughout the week.
• How do you plan to evolve or grow as a coach at MVMT Hub?
I’m a bit of a nerd and love upskilling myself. for me knowledge is power. Whatever extra knowledge I have to provide to members is a win in my books.
Community and Culture
• What do you think sets MVMT Hub apart from other CrossFit gyms?
The Exercise Science/Physiology background. Jason ensures the programming through Hub is tailored to cover all aspects of fitness and injury prevention throughout the week. This is so important when we are talking about long term strength and progress gains!
How would you describe the community at the MVMT Hub and how does it impact a members gym experience?
Because it is such an inclusive space, it really makes coming into the gym easy. Knowing you have friends that are probably going to be suffering through the workout with you, actually makes it fun!
• How do you contribute to building a positive and inclusive environment at the gym?
I try my best to engage with everyone I come across. At the end of the day, it doesn't hurt to be kind.
• What challenges have you faced in your fitness journey and how have you overcome them?
My first challenge (which really is a blessing) was when I became pregnant with my daughter Zella. Adjusting the workouts to my needs throughout pregnancy and post-partum has been easy in an environment where it is welcomed.
